For Parents and Students:

It is important to plan early so that you are aware of what you need to do to move successfully toward your future goals in the areas of education/training, career, and independent living.  The courses your will take in high school are an important part of the planning process.  You may have to adjust your plan along the way; but the important factor here is that you start with a plan in place.  The documents below will help you with some of the planning process.  It is important to also speak with teachers, counselors, and advisers regarding your plan.

BVSD students that have completed the minimum requirements for graduation have five options:

  1. Graduate from High School which will end all special education services within BVSD or other secondary public school systems
  2. Remain high school status (12+) and access the services offered by the district through the 18 - 21 Program
  3. Remain high school status (12+) and access the CTEC programs that has a direct correlation to the student's IEP post secondary goals
  4. Remain high school status (12+) and access both CTEC and the 18-21 program
  5. Request the diploma and graduate at any time during their enrollment in the 18-21 program or CTEC (the student would NOT be considered a dropout due to the fact that they have earned all credits necessary for a diploma)

The decision to graduate or continue to receive special education services through the public schools should be made by the IEP team as early as possible.  Students should definitely know their plan for acquiring the needed credits to receive a diploma early on.  The discussions surrounding graduation, continuing high school in the 18 - 21 program or CTE access should start as early as possible.

FYI: Here is a document outlining the specific requirements to receive a diploma.  It can be of help as you design your student's specific plan for an IEP driven graduation.

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT A STUDENT WHO HAS COMPLETED THE REQUIRED CREDITS FOR A BVSD DIPLOMA DOES NOT APPEAR AS A DROPOUT.  PLEASE COMPLETE THE CORRECT PAPERWORK FOR STUDENTS THAT WILL BE GRADUATING.  DO NOT FILL OUT THE WITHDRAWAL FORM FOR STUDENTS THAT ARE GRADUATING,

FOR STUDENTS THAT WILL BE CONTINUING TO RECEIVE BVSD SERVICES THROUGH CTEC, 18-21 PROGRAMS, OR A COMBINATION OF BOTH, YOU WILL NEED TO DOCUMENT THE CLASSES A STUDENT WILL BE TAKING (NEXT YEAR) IN THEIR IEP AND DOCUMENT ACCURATE SERVICE HOURS.
